Eric Chelle’s reign as Super Eagles head coach began on a winning note as Nigeria claimed a 2-0 victory against Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The West African giants dominated at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali, with Victor Osimhen delivering a brace to secure the crucial win, Footballrover reports.

It was the Super Eagles’ first triumph in the qualifiers, boosting their hopes of advancing to the global tournament.

Speaking after the match, Eric Chelle expressed pride in his players’ performance despite limited preparation time.

It was a difficult game, Rwanda has a great team. I am proud of my players performance. We work a lot within the few days,” Eric Chelle said after the game.

The Super Eagles head coach highlighted his side’s tactical approach, revealing they tested two different systems during the match.

We had just two full training sessions. We keep the ball in the second half, good performance from my guys (players),” he noted.

He emphasised the importance of teamwork, stating that every player in the squad has a role to play in the journey to World Cup qualification.

A step in the right direction for Super Eagles

With this victory, the Super Eagles climbed to fourth place in Group C, just a point behind Rwanda, while South Africa continues to lead with ten points.
