Enyimba’s impressive five-game unbeaten run came crashing down on Thursday as Remo Stars secured a 2-0 victory in a high-stakes NPFL Matchday 31 clash at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.

Despite creating multiple chances, the defending champions paid dearly for their wastefulness in front of goal, Footballrover reports.

Adebayo Olamilakan’s opener in the 28th minute set the tone before Samson Olasupo doubled the lead in the 67th minute, dealing a serious blow to Enyimba’s hopes of climbing the table.

The People’s Elephant struggled to convert opportunities, with Christian Nnaji and Mujeeb Odufeso missing key chances.

Eguma frustrated but refuses to give up

Speaking after the game, Enyimba head coach Stanley Eguma did not hold back his disappointment, admitting his side only had themselves to blame for the defeat against Remo Stars.

It wasn’t the result we hoped for. We came here with a game plan to, at worst, pick a point, but it turned otherwise. We had the chances to score before their goal came, but our inability to convert our chances was our bane today. If we had converted ours, we would have even gotten three goals today,” Eguma claimed.

Despite the setback, the experienced coach remains optimistic.

We have to go back and work on our conversion rate because, at this stage in the league, you don’t make such mistakes. We will keep playing, taking it one match at a time. It’s football—you never know what can happen. We will keep fighting until it’s over,” Eguma added.

Can Enyimba recover before it’s too late?

Midfielder Chinedu Ufere echoed his coach’s sentiments, emphasising that the team still has a fighting chance.

Our hope of coming here was to get something, especially since we had picked points on the road in our last two away games. We had our chances but couldn’t utilise them, while they took theirs and made it count,” Ufere said.

The midfielder, however, strongly believes the Aba bpys can still bounce back as a few points separates them from the top spots,

As you can see, the gap on the log is not much. All we need to do is keep our heads up and keep fighting for maximum points. Hopefully, we can be there.”

With the race for continental qualification heating up, Enyimba must find their cutting edge quickly if they hope to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite.
