Former Rivers United forward Echeta Deputy will be facing an Iraq Stars League ban after receiving a straight red card in Zakho FC’s goalless draw against Erbil on Friday evening.

The heated Round 20 encounter at Franso Hariri Stadium saw the 24-year-old Nigerian dismissed in the second period of the game as his team battled to hold their hosts.

Deputy wasn’t the only player sent off in the match. His team was already down to ten men after Mohammed Ali Abbood received a straight red in the 76th minute.

Just four minutes later, Deputy followed suit, leaving Zakho with only nine players for the remainder of the game.

Echeta Deputy’s red card came just days after his standout performance, where he netted his first goal of the season in Zakho’s dominant win over Al-Qasim in their last outing.

However, his latest on-field misconduct now places him in hot water, with an impending Iraq Stars League ban looming.

Zakho held on despite numerical disadvantage

Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for over 10 minutes, Zakho held firm, preventing Erbil from capitalising on their two-man advantage.

However, the outcome of the encounter extended Zakho’s unbeaten streak to six matches, comprising four wins and two draws.

While Zakho remains atop the league standings, their lead is under threat, depending on second-placed Al Shorta’s upcoming fixture.

The club will now await the league’s disciplinary decision on Echeta Deputy’s suspension, which could see him face a three-match ban.
