Rivers Angels were denied a crucial victory at home on Wednesday as FC Robo Queens snatched a last-gasp equaliser through Ijamilusi Folashade to force a 1-1 draw in the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership.
Youngster Effiong Peace had given the Jewel of Rivers a deserved lead in the 21st minute, marking her debut in style with a well-taken goal, Footballrover reports.
However, Ijamilusi cancelled out her strike just after the break, stealing the ball from Offiong Immaculata before firing past the goalkeeper.
Despite a controversial overturned penalty decision in the 61st minute, Head Coach Whyte Ogbonda refused to dwell on refereeing calls.
“The game ended 1-1, but that wasn’t the score line or result we were looking for in this match. I’m one of the coaches that don’t like complaining about referees,” he lamented.
Ogbonda’s confidence stems from his team’s position at the top of the table, even after a day of draws across the league.
He was particularly excited about the potential of debutante Effiong Peace, praising her performance and predicting many more goals from the talented striker.
He acknowledged her potential, highlighting her strengths and promising her future performance.
He assured her that, while this was her first match, she would excel with more experience.
Peace herself expressed her joy at contributing on her debut and aiming high for the rest of the season.
“It makes me feel really happy, and I know I’m going to score more to make me carry the trophy by God’s grace,” she said.
With their next match against Remo Stars Ladies on home soil, the Rivers Angels have a chance to bounce back and solidify their title ambitions.
Coach Ogbonda and his team remain determined to overcome Wednesday‘s disappointment and continue their charge towards the championship.
