Ajax will surely hold their goalkeeper – Andre Onana responsible for the Dutch club’s elimination from the Champions League after losing 3-2 on aggregate against Portuguese outfit, Benfica.
On Tuesday night, a tenacious Benfica side defended well and scored from a set-piece in the second half to seal the victory at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
As the game went on, it became clear that the Eredivisie team was merely retreading familiar terrain, but their Portuguese rivals looked content and hoped for a fortunate break, a counterattack, or a penalty shootout.
77 minutes into the game, Darwin Nunez took advantage of Onana’s blunder to send the Eagles racing into the quarter-finals.

The Eagles led the way against the run of play, scoring the game’s only goal just 13 minutes before stoppage time.
Nunez beats Timber to the ball and buries a strong header into the back of the net after Onana rushed out and misjudged a Grimaldo corner into his box.
It’s always a worry for any team that controls a two-legged tie without taking the lead, and Ajax has paid the price by exiting the competition.

Benfica’s unbeaten run in all competitions now stands to eight games, and they have reached the final eight of Europe’s best competition after winning only one of their previous 14 away Champions League matches.
