Atletico Madrid are through to the next round of Champions League after knocking Manchester United out with a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday night and a 2-1 aggregate win in the round-of-16 tie.
Both side were level terms following a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League tie.
Anthony Elanga’s late goal threw the game into doubt, despite United’s belief that they had the upper hand due to home advantage.
Atletico also came into the game with a lot of momentum, having won their last three LaLiga matches in a row, defeating Celta Vigo, Real Betis, and Cadiz.
After a sequence of thrilling contest, Renan Lodi fired Atletico Madrid ahead four minutes to end of first half.
Antoine Griezmann’s cross was directed beyond David de Gea by Lodi, who was in the right spot at the right moment. He buried a header into the back of the net to give the Spanish side the lead.
Felix made a strong move into the area before passing to Griezmann, who sent a lovely cross into Lodi’s path to score the game changing and only goal.

De Gea was on point earlier in the game, deflecting a magnificent Rodrigo De Paul shot away from goal.
The Red Devils had been the better team up until the goal, but were caught on the counter. When Joao Felix’s goal was disallowed, the home team was warned, yet they were penalised in the same way when Lodi scored.
Jan Oblak, at the other end, was compelled to deny Anthony Elanga and Bruno Fernandes goal scoring chances

AtlΓ©tico Madrid are the only side in UEFA Champions League history to eliminate all three English winners of the competition in knockout ties – Chelsea (2013-14 semi-final), Liverpool (2019-20 last 16) and Man Utd (2021-22 last 16).
Man United tried to apply pressure but were unable to find breakthrough due to a strong defensive display by the Los Rojiblancos and their goalkeeper – Jan Oblak.
With the result, United’s European campaign comes to a close, but Diego Simeone’s side will continue their quest for the final eight.
