Babaganaru’s departure marks a dramatic end to his brief tenure at the club, which has struggled at the start of the 2024/25 NPFL season.

A troubling season for Akwa United
Since Babaganaru’s arrival at Akwa United last season, he was tasked with steering the team away from relegation.
The Kano-born coach successfully achieved that goal, guiding the Promised Keepers to safety.
However, the 2024/25 season has been a different story, with the club currently sitting in 19th place, tied with bottom-placed Lobi Stars on just 16 points from 16 matches.
The team’s poor form—comprising 4 wins, 4 draws, and 8 losses—has sparked frustration within the team.
The coach’s previous relegation experience
Before taking charge of Akwa United, Babaganaru had a difficult season with Gombe United, where he was unable to prevent relegation.
In February 2024, Babaganaru stepped down from his role at Gombe United, as the club remained deep in the relegation zone.
The Savannah Scorpions were 19th in the NPFL standings, with 21 points from 21 matches and a -17 goal difference.
Despite this, he was brought in by Akwa United, who were also struggling against relegation.
His unexpected move to the former NPFL champions in March 2024 came after the departure of Fatai Osho.
