Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has made the move from FC Cincinnati to Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer (MLS).
The 27-year-old centre-back has signed with the Rapids through the 2025 season, with options for 2026 and 2027, Footballrover reports.
Chidozie Awaziem’s brief spell at FC Cincinnati
Chidozie’s time at FC Cincinnati was short but eventful. During his lone season with the club, he made 14 appearances across all competitions, contributing three assists.
However, his stint was hindered by injuries that limited his impact. Despite the setbacks, Awaziem’s solid performances showed glimpses of his potential.
“Thank you, Ian and Chido. Wishing you both all the best,” FC Cincinnati wrote.
Colorado Rapids secure Awaziem in $1 million trade
The Rapids secured Chidozie and fellow defender Ian Murphy from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $1 million in General Allocation Money (GAM).
The club’s official announcement on social media welcomed both players, emphasising their excitement to add them to the squad.
The Rapids’ post read,
“The club has acquired defenders Chidozie Awaziem and Ian Murphy from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $1 million in General Allocation Money. Welcome to the Rocky Mountains, Chidozie and Ian.”
Chidozie Awaziem’s future at Colorado Rapids
With this move, Awaziem enters a new chapter in his MLS career. Rapids President Pádraig Smith expressed his excitement about the additions, highlighting both players’ leadership qualities and their experience in Europe and internationally.
Smith believes that Awaziem and Murphy will significantly strengthen the Rapids’ defensive line, aligning with the team’s tactical approach as they look to build on their success in the 2024 season.
