Sevilla forward Akor Adams made a memorable Super Eagles debut on Friday, coming off the bench to help Nigeria secure a crucial 2-0 win over Lesotho in their latest World Cup qualifiers tie.
The victory keeps Nigeria’s ambitions alive with the emergence of Adams on the international stage, Footballrover reports.
Akor Adams changes the game as Super Eagles turn tide
The match at Polokwane was cagey in the first half, with neither side finding the breakthrough.
But Nigeria capitalised early in the second half when a Lesotho defender handled the ball in the box, giving the Super Eagles a penalty.
William Troost-Ekong stepped up and coolly converted to give Nigeria the lead.
With momentum on their side, Nigeria pressed for a second. In the 80th minute, Adams linked with Victor Osimhen, cutting inside and finishing with composure to kill off the contest.
That combination injected fresh life into Nigeria’s attack—Adams’ arrival changed the flow.
A late effort from Lesotho’s Hlompho Kalake in the 83rd minute offered a brief scare, but Nigeria held firm until the final whistle.
In stoppage time, Semi Ajayi and Zaidu Sanusi came on in place of Osimhen and Moses Simon, shoring up the defence and securing the 2-1 margin.
What’s next for Adams and Super Eagles?
This was not a perfect performance for the Eagles, but it was a nervy, vital win on the road—especially with the final matchday looming against Benin Republic.
The stakes are high: Nigeria must win and hope results elsewhere go their way.
Yet the moment belongs to Akor Adams. His goal on debut deepens competition in Nigeria’s forward lines and offers fresh tactical options for the coach in the run-up to the decider.
The 25-year-old forward became the 6th Nigerian to find the net on his debut, following in the footsteps of Brian Idowu and Obafemi Martins.
There is a cloud over the squad, however: Ademola Lookman will miss the Benin match after accumulating a yellow card tonight. He was later substituted for Samuel Chukwueze.
Still, for now, the Super Eagles fly on with their World Cup push.
Zimbabwe vs South Africa: Bafana Held in Frustrating Stalemate
South Africa’s hopes of tightening their grip on World Cup qualification took a hit after a goalless draw against ten-man Zimbabwe in Harare.
Despite dominating possession, Bafana Bafana couldn’t find a way past a resilient home side.
The result leaves South Africa’s qualification fate hanging by a thread ahead of their final fixture.
Rwanda vs Benin Republic: Tosin’s Late Strike Lifts Benin to Vital Win
Aiyegun Tosin struck deep into stoppage time to hand Benin Republic a dramatic 1–0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali.
It was a tight, scrappy affair until the Beninese forward pounced in the 95th minute, sealing three priceless points that pushed Benin to the top of their qualifying group.
The late win now sets up a high-stakes final clash against Nigeria — a match that could decide who progresses to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
