Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has admitted that his team must come up with a special tactical plan to deal with the explosive threat of Victor Osimhen when they face the Super Eagles in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoffs.

The Panthers’ boss described the Nigerian striker as an “unpredictable player” capable of changing a match in an instant, insisting Gabon cannot rely on conventional defending if they are to stand a chance against a team brimming with attacking power, Footballrover reports.

Mouyouma eyes tactical innovation against Nigeria

Speaking ahead of the much-anticipated playoff clash, Mouyouma acknowledged that stopping Osimhen will require a mix of discipline, compactness, and creativity.

We have to defend, as we wouldn’t defend against just anyone,” the Gabon coach said during Thursday’s press conference. “He’s unpredictable, he loves playing in behind, and if you close that space, he can still hurt you from set pieces. That’s the complexity—you can’t switch off for a second.”

The coach hinted that Gabon’s defensive line will have to adapt quickly to Osimhen’s movement while also keeping the Super Eagles pinned higher up the pitch.

We need to take the game into their half,” Mouyouma added. “That’s the solution for us.”

Osimhen’s form puts Gabon on high alert

Osimhen’s recent form has given Mouyouma every reason to be cautious. Despite featuring in only five matches during the qualifiers due to injury concerns, the Super Eagles forward still managed six goals, including a brilliant hat-trick in Nigeria’s 4–0 win over Benin on October 14—a result that sealed their spot in the playoffs.

At club level, the Nigerian talisman has been just as unstoppable, recently scoring a Champions League hat-trick against Ajax Amsterdam to reach the top of the competition’s scoring charts.

His combination of power, precision, and relentless pressing has turned him into one of the most feared strikers in world football.

That individual brilliance is exactly what Gabon wants to contain. Mouyouma’s challenge lies not just in marking Osimhen but in denying him the kind of service that allows him to dominate.

Osimhen, who narrowly missed out on qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has made it clear he intends to lead Nigeria to next year’s finals in North America.
