Super Falcons star Vivian Ikechukwu has continued her impressive season form, bagging a brace once again as her team Club Santos Laguna battled UNAM Pumas Women in an 8-goal thriller in the Mexico Liga MX Femenil Apertura.
Despite scoring twice to pull her team back into the encounter, her effort was in vain as Club Santos suffered a disappointing 5-3 defeat in front of their home fans at the Estadio Corona, Footballrover reports.
Vivian Ikechukwu Brace Not Enough for Club Santos Laguna
The 28-year-old forward has now scored in her third consecutive game, taking her goal tally to four in eight appearances. However, her team has lost every match in which she has found the net.
The former Rivers Angels striker and her teammates have now endured four consecutive defeats, with only a narrow 2-1 win over Chivas in their last five outings.
Santos Laguna Women and UNAM Pumas delivered pure chaos in Round 9 of the Liga MX Women’s Apertura, with the visitors eventually walking away with all three points.
The fireworks began early. Stephanie Ribeiro struck first blood for Pumas in the 8th minute, but Nigerian forward Ikechukwu immediately hit back a minute later.
By the 12th minute, Nayely Bolaños restored Pumas’ lead, only for Ikechukwu to level again in the 22nd minute.
The second half brought no let-up. Ribeiro grabbed her second just after the restart, but a late own goal from Paola Chavero in the 78th minute pulled Santos back to 3-3.
The drama peaked in stoppage time: Areli Reyes saw red, reducing the home team to ten players.
Ribeiro then completed her hat-trick in the 90th minute before Ximena Ríos sealed the 5-3 victory two minutes later.
It was a breathless encounter that had it all—goals, comebacks, a red card, and a hat-trick hero.
In the end, UNAM Pumas Women left Santos Laguna wondering how they let this one slip away.
Santos Laguna’s Struggle Continues
That crushing defeat leaves Club Santos ladies just one point above the drop zone, sitting in 15th place with four points in the 18-team table.
They will now prepare for their next fixture against Necaxa on Friday as they look to bounce back and rediscover winning form.
