Godwin Okwara found the back of the net once again on Friday evening, but it wasn’t enough to secure all three points for his side, El Gaish, as their Egypt Premier League survival struggle continues.
The 27-year-old came to the rescue, scoring the equaliser that salvaged a point for El Gaish as they fought back from behind to hold Enppi to a 1-1 draw at the Gehaz El Reyada El Askari Stadium in Cairo, Footballrover reports.
This marked the former Rivers United star’s seventh goal contribution of the season, with six goals and an assist in 20 appearances—matching his output from last season, where he had five goals and two assists in 26 games.
Okwara’s key role in El Gaish’s Egypt Premier League survival fight
Okwara’s penalty in the 58th minute restored parity after Salah Zayed’s first-half strike had put ENPPI ahead at the stroke of halftime.
Despite being dominated in possession for much of the match, Okwara and his teammates showed resilience, holding on to the final whistle to secure a hard-earned point.
El Gaish’s fight for survival in the Egypt League remains tense as the team has managed just one win in their last six outings, registering four draws and a defeat.
Notably, three of these draws ended goalless, highlighting the side’s ongoing challenges in creativity and converting chances.
Long road ahead: Can Okwara lead the survival charge?
Despite recent results, El Gaish remains third in the relegation group table with 27 points, trailing second-placed El Gouna by three points, while ZED sits at the top.
Their final two crucial matches for survival are against Ghazl El Mahallah and Modern Sport.
Before these decisive league games, El Gaish will get to face El Ismaily in the League Cup Play-Offs, where Godwin Okwara’s influence could prove vital once more.
El Gaish’s survival hopes hinge on strong performances from Godwin Okwara and his teammates in the coming fixtures.
