Promise David’s ice-cold goal in Europa League gives Union SG hope

Union St. Gilloise wasted no time asserting dominance at the Johan Cruijff Arena.

In the 16th minute, Sofiane Boufal curled in a perfect free kick, and Kevin Mac Allister met it with a precise header past Remko Pasveer, putting the visitors ahead.

Just three minutes later, Boufal thought he had doubled the lead with a brilliant solo effort, only for VAR to rule it out for offside.

The Belgian side, however, remained relentless, and their persistence paid off in the 25th minute when Ajax were reduced to 10 men following Davy Klaassen’s reckless challenge.

VAR intervened again shortly after, this time awarding Union SG a penalty.

Up stepped Promise David, who confidently buried the spot-kick into the bottom left corner, sending Pasveer the wrong way.

It was an ice-cold finish from the former Nigerian U23 star, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2 and marking his first-ever Europa League goal.

This strike took his tally to 13 for the season—8 league goals, 4 cup goals, and now 1 in Europe, alongside 4 assists.

Extra-time agony as Ajax edge through

Despite controlling much of the game, Union SG couldn’t find a third goal in regular time, forcing the match into extra time.

Just three minutes into the added period, the tide turned cruelly against them.

A handball by Christian Burgess gifted Ajax a penalty, and Kenneth Taylor made no mistake, firing past Anthony Moris to make it 2-1.

Union SG fought bravely, but Ajax held firm to claim a 3-2 aggregate victory, booking their place in the Europa League Round of 16 against either Eintracht Frankfurt or Olympique Lyonnais.

The result was a bitter pill to swallow for Union SG, who had stunned Chuba Akpom’s parent club on their home turf but ultimately fell short.

While the defeat stings, Promise David’s ice-cold goal in Europa will surely be remembered as hs performance against Ajax proves he is a player to watch out for.
