Finidi George, the newly appointed head coach of Rivers United, has expressed his reservations about the team’s ambitious target for the upcoming season, lamenting that the goal set by the management is a difficult task.
Finidi George officially signed a two-year deal with Rivers United as their new head coach on Wednesday evening, Footballrover reports.
The signing ceremony took place at the Real Madrid Football Academy in Port Harcourt on Wednesday afternoon.
The former Ajax winger, who recently resigned as head coach of the Super Eagles, takes over from Stanley Eguma, who left Rivers United after a disappointing position in the 2023–24 NPFL season.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Finidi George revealed the huge task set for him by the team management.
Recall that the Pride of Rivers’ finished eighth this past NPFL season and will be looking to change that story under his leadership, but Finidi claims it’s a difficult task.
“The target set for Rivers United is to perform and at least get the continental ticket this season. So, it’s a difficult task, but we are capable and will try our best to achieve that,” he said.
He acknowledged that securing a continental ticket will require a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication from the team.
The former Enyimba coach noted that his reason for joining Rivers United at this time was to achieve success, expressing his hope that the fans would recognise the team’s goals.
He stressed his belief in consistent victories, which he said would lead to overall satisfaction for fans.
Finidi explained that his purpose for coming back home wasn’t leisure, adding that if he’d wanted to have fun in Port Harcourt, he would have chosen a different time for his visit.
However, he acknowledged that Rivers State is generally an enjoyable place to be.
He acknowledged that for a prestigious team like Rivers United, the primary objective is undoubtedly winning, which they’ll strive for.
The coach recognised the inherent challenges of football, emphasising that everyone desires results, but achieving them requires dedicated effort.
