Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has spoken out following head coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s harsh remarks about his missed penalty against Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League.

The Nigerian international expressed his disappointment and frustration at being singled out despite his commitment to the team, footballrover reports.

The heart broken Super Eagles star took to social media to address Gasperini’s comments, stating that he was deeply hurt by the way he was criticised.

Lookman emphasised his dedication to Atalanta and the hard work he has put in since joining the club.

“It saddens me on a day like this to have to write this statement—most of all because of what we have achieved together as a team and as a city. Being singled out in the manner I have been not only hurts but feels deeply disrespectful,” Lookman wrote.

The 26-year-old also revealed that the designated penalty taker had instructed him to take the spot kick, adding that he stepped up in the moment to support his teammates.

Lookman stands by his decision

Despite missing the penalty, Lookman remains resolute, stating that he will continue to face challenges and turn adversity into strength.

He acknowledged that the entire team was hurting from the result but remained focused on moving forward.

“This makes what happened last night even more hurtful. Along with our incredible fans, we as a team are hurting too with last night’s result. Life’s about challenges and turning pain into power, which I’ll continue to do,” he added.

Gasperini’s post-match comments labelled Lookman as “one of the worst penalty takers ever seen,” sparking controversy over the coach’s handling of the situation.

While Gasperini’s criticism was severe, Ademola Lookman’s response shows his professionalism and determination to keep pushing forward.
