Belgian giants Club Brugge were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by KV Mechelen in their opening game of the Jupiler Pro League season, with Raphael Onyedika seeing 45 minutes of action.
The Super Eagles star was initially not part of the starting lineup but was introduced during the second period of the encounter, Footballrover reports.
The home side struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, prompting manager Nicky Hayen to introduce the Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika at the start of the second half.
The 23-year-old midfielder, making his first league appearance of the season, injected much-needed energy into Brugge’s midfield.
However, it was the visitors who struck first, with Belgian defender Joaquin Seys finding the net just five minutes after Onyedika’s introduction.
Undeterred, Brugge piled on the pressure and eventually found an equaliser through Patrick Pflucke, who restored parity in the 69th minute.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, the home side was unable to convert their opportunities, with seven shots on target going begging from 28 goal attempts.
Onyedika, who impressed with his 93% passing accuracy, ball distribution, and two shots on goal, will be hoping to build on his performance as Brugge turn their attention to their next fixture against St. Liege next Sunday.
The draw leaves Brugge in a precarious position early in the season, and they will need to improve their finishing if they are to challenge for the title.
