Rivers Angels asserted their dominance in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) with a convincing 2-0 victory over Benue Queens at the Lafia City Stadium.
Despite the home side’s pre-match bold threats of delivering “war, fire, and brimstone,” they failed to match the attacking strength of the FA Cup champions, who made a strong statement with their performance, Footballrover reports.
Benue Queens falter despite bold claims
Determined to secure their first win of the season, Benue Queens talked a big game, but their resistance crumbled against the relentless Rivers Angels.
Coach Tosan Blankson made just one change from the squad that held Bayelsa United to a 1-1 draw, bringing in Taiwo Ajibade for the injured Peace Effiong.
The first half remained a tight, cagey affair, with neither side able to break the deadlock.
However, the match took a decisive turn just two minutes into the second half when Benue Queens’ Ibidun Omolola brought down Aminat Folorunsho in the box.
The referee pointed straight to the spot, and Rivers Angels’ captain Polinus Ifeoma confidently converted the penalty, giving the visitors a crucial lead.
Mary Moses seals the deal for Rivers Angels
With Benue Queens struggling to respond, Rivers Angels continued to apply pressure.
Their persistence paid off ten minutes before full-time when Mary Moses latched onto a well-placed pass and slotted home the second goal, extinguishing any hopes of a comeback for the hosts.
The win extends Rivers Angels’ strong start to the NWFL season, reinforcing their status as title contenders as they continue to maintain their unbeaten run to six games now.
Meanwhile, Benue Queens will need to regroup quickly if they are to turn their bold words into actual results on the pitch.
