Rivers Angels have made a bold statement ahead of the upcoming Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) season by securing the signature of highly rated midfielder Taiwo Afolabi from Delta Queens.
This surprising move, combined with the unveiling of a new boss to lead the young starlets, signals Rivers Angels’ intent to dominate the new campaign, Footballrover reports.
Taiwo Afolabi’s stunning rise and Delta Queens exit
Taiwo Afolabi’s journey to stardom began three seasons ago when she joined Delta Queens.
Her exceptional performances quickly earned her a spot in the starting lineup, and she eventually captained the team.
Afolabi’s leadership was crucial in Delta Queens’ 2023 NWFL Premiership success and their qualification for the WAFU B Champions League in Benin.
Afolabi first caught national attention during the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India, where she played a key role in the Flamingos’ historic third-place finish, defeating powerhouses like the USA and Germany.
One of her standout moments was a stunning 25-yard strike against New Zealand, which was hailed as one of the tournament’s best goals.
Her talent saw her promoted to the Nigeria U20 team, where she represented the Super Falconets in the WAFU B U20 Championship.

In addition to Taiwo Afolabi, the Garden City side also introduced several new signings aimed at strengthening the squad.
