Chuba Akpom’s first Ligue 1 goal for Lille wasn’t enough to stop a disappointing home defeat against Le Havre at the Decathlon Arena on Saturday evening.
Despite his late strike, the Super Eagles hopeful could not rescue his new side from a 2-1 loss, leaving Lille questioning what went wrong after a promising start to the game, Footballrover reports.
Chuba Akpom’s first Ligue 1 goal in a losing effort
Lille came into this game at the back of two consecutive wins and a draw, hoping to bounce back to winning ways but fell short against the relegation-struggling side.
The home team was stunned early on when Ahmed Hassan Koka put Le Havre ahead in the 38th minute.
That goal separated both sides heading into the first half break before the relegation-threatened team doubled their lead in the 56th minute through Issa Soumaré, leaving Lille with a mountain to climb.
Lille had a moment of hope when Hákon Arnar Haraldsson thought he had pulled one back in the 80th minute, only for VAR to rule his goal out due to a foul in the build-up.
Akpom, introduced as a substitute in the second half, was the one to finally get on the scoresheet, scoring in the 7th minute of injury time.
His goal, however, came too late to spark a meaningful comeback.
Chuba Akpom’s late goal can’t lift Lille’s spirits
With the loss, Lille remain in 5th place with 35 points, while Le Havre, who sit just above the relegation zone, secure a crucial three points.
As Akpom looks to build on his first Ligue 1 goal, Lille will need to regroup quickly before their upcoming fixture against Rennes.
