Despite contributing an assist for Nottingham Forest, Taiwo Awoniyi couldn’t help but watch his team face a huge setback at Villa Park, succumbing to a 4-2 defeat in their Premier League encounter on Saturday.

Having successfully passed a late fitness assessment, Awoniyi earned a spot in Forest’s starting lineup, Footballrover reports.

However, Aston Villa exhibited early dominance, netting three goals in the first half, placing them in a seemingly unassailable position.

Ollie Watkins initiated the scoring just four minutes into the game, followed by two goals from Douglas Luiz within a 10-minute interval.

Forest’s hopes were briefly revitalised with a goal by Moussa Niakhate in the fifth minute of stoppage time, courtesy of an assist from Awoniyi.

After this glimmer of optimism, Forest’s aspirations were further boosted when Morgan Gibbs-White swiftly scored another goal just three minutes into the second half, tightening the scoreline to 3-2.

Nevertheless, Villa’s Leon Bailey extinguished any flickering hopes of a Forest comeback with a goal in the 61st minute, solidifying Villa’s victory at 4-2.

The Super Eagles forward has now netted six goals and provided three assists for the Tricky Trees in 15 league games this season.

Due to the setback, Taiwo Awoniyi and his teammates are still very much in the heart of the relegation battle.

They are now four points ahead of Luton Town, who are ranked eighteenth in the league. However, with Luton having a game in hand, that margin might be close to one.
