Nigeria international Simy Nwankwo, who was once a staple in Serie A, seems to have found a new rhythm in Italian Serie B after hitting a new milestone, showing that he’s still relevant in the game.

In a season where his playing time has been limited, the 4-cap Super Eagles forward proved he’s far from past his prime, scoring in dramatic fashion during Salernitana’s dominant victory over Carrarese, Footballrover reports.

Although he entered the match as a substitute with the outcome already decided, a late goal from the 32-year-old striker shows he still got his sharp finishing ability.

The forgotten Super Eagles forward found the back of the net on Sunday, helping Salernitana secure a dominant 4-1 victory over Carrarese in Serie B at the Stadio Arechi.

That goal marked his third of the season, bringing his total to 38 career goals in Serie B.

This milestone positions him as Nigeria’s third-highest scorer in the competition’s history, trailing only Osarimen Ebagua (62 goals) and Jerry Mbakogu (43).

Despite being largely overlooked by the Super Eagles since 2018, his status as one of Nigeria’s most successful forwards in Italy remains unchallenged.

Recall that back in 2021 season, Simy Nwankwo netted over 20 goals for Crotone after equaling Yakubu Aiyegbeni’s record for the most goals by a Nigerian in a single season of a top-five European league this century.

He also became just the second African player to score 20 or more goals in a single Serie A season, following Samuel Eto’o, who scored 21 in 2010/11.

That same season, Simy surpassed Obafemi Martins to become the Nigerian with the most goals in Serie A history, reaching 29 goals in 11 fewer matches.

Simy’s latest achievement continues his legacy in Italian football, a journey that saw him briefly hold the title of Nigeria’s all-time Serie A top scorer until Victor Osimhen’s rise at Napoli.

While Osimhen now leads with 65 Serie A goals, Simy’s presence in Italy is still commendable, with his continued success in Serie B adding to his impressive resume.

His goal tally this season, along with his one assist contribution in 12 appearances, continues to keep him relevant, even in a more limited role at Salernitana.

It’s clear that the 4-cap Super Eagles forward isn’t ready to fade into obscurity just yet.
