Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed his joy on social media, revealing how it feels to make a return to football action after being sidelined for more than a month.
Despite missing the AFCON 2023 call-up due to injury, the 26-year-old made a comeback in their recent Premier League game against Arsenal, Footballrover reports.
In the match at the City Ground on Tuesday night, Awoniyi found the back of the net, but his side succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against the Gunners.
Defensive errors proved costly for Awoniyi and his team, with Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka capitalising on mistakes to secure the victory for Arsenal.
Even though the outcome was disappointing, Awoniyi’s incredible finish in the closing minutes proved his resiliency following a six-week layoff due to a groin injury.
Unfortunately, the late consolation goal wasn’t enough for his team.
Awoniyi, who has a knack for scoring against Arsenal, now boasts three goals in his last three games against Mikel Arteta’s side.
Despite the setback, the former Union Berlin star remains optimistic, looking forward to bouncing back to top form as they prepare to face Bournemouth in their upcoming Sunday fixture.
Taking to his X page (formerly Twitter), the Nigerian international admitted the disappointment of the result but emphasised his joy at being back in the game.
“Disappointing result, but feel good to be back at it again,” he wrote.
