The Super Eagles of Nigeria moved one step closer to a historic fourth Africa Cup of Nations title with a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria in their quarter-final clash on Saturday night in Marrakech.
It was a performance built on control, patience, and ruthless finishing when it mattered most, Footballrover reports.
Super Eagles Control First Half but Miss Early Chances
Nigeria dominated large spells of the game and finally turned superiority into goals, with Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams finding the net to seal a deserved place in the last four.
From the opening whistle, the Eagles set the tempo. They pressed high, kept possession, and pinned Algeria back in their own half during the early stages.
Ademola Lookman came close midway through the first half, firing a powerful effort from the edge of the box that was well saved by Algeria goalkeeper Zidane.
Moments later, Calvin Bassey thought he had opened the scoring from close range, but an Algerian defender cleared the ball off the line, with VAR confirming no goal.
Nigeria continued to create the better openings. Akor Adams was handed a golden chance after a defensive error, but his effort narrowly missed the target.
Despite the scoreline remaining goalless at halftime, the Eagles were clearly on top and looked the more dangerous side.
Osimhen and Akor Adams Seal Famous Win for Super Eagles
The breakthrough arrived almost immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Victor Osimhen rose highest to meet a fine cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, guiding a powerful header into the net to give Nigeria the lead.
It was Osimhen’s fourth goal of the tournament and a perfect start to the second period.
Ten minutes later, the Eagles struck again. Alex Iwobi split the Algerian defence with a precise pass to Osimhen, who showed great composure before squaring the ball to Adams.
The striker rounded the goalkeeper and finished calmly to double Nigeria’s advantage and his second of the competition.
From that point on, Nigeria managed the game with confidence. They were solid without the ball and sharp in transition, limiting Algeria to very few clear chances.
The final whistle confirmed a statement win and arguably the best display so far under head coach Eric Chelle, as the Super Eagles marched confidently into the AFCON semi-finals.
A big night for the Super Eagles in Marrakech as they outclassed the Desert Foxes of Algeria to book a place in the semi-finals.
Nigeria will now face tournament hosts, the Atlas Lions of Morocco.
