It was meant to be a night of fierce football, but one Sundowns fan Siboniso Masango found himself in a life-or-de*th moment that had nothing to do with the pitch.
In a twist of fate, Siboniso Masango ended up being more than just a spectator—he became a hero, Footballrover reports.
But even in his moment of bravery, what the Esperance supporter said to him will leave you stunned.
“He thought I meant harm”—Sundowns fan Siboniso Masango on his life-saving moment
After Mamelodi Sundowns’ narrow 1-0 victory over Esperance in the CAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg—thanks to Peter Shalulile’s crucial strike—tensions flared off the pitch.
Siboniso Masango shared the dramatic moment on Metro FM, recounting how a chaotic post-match confrontation nearly turned deadly.
According to Masango, fans clashed in the stands after Esperance supporters started pulling down Sundowns banners.
As emotions escalated, one man—later identified as Christian—was accidentally pushed over a railing on the stadium’s fifth floor. What happened next was nothing short of incredible.
Masango spotted the Esperance fan dangling dangerously, clinging for life in the rain.
“My instincts kicked in. I didn’t even think—I just moved,” the Sundowns fan recalled. “I grabbed his forearm, but he thought I was trying to hurt him. He cried, saying, ‘Please don’t do it, I have three kids. I can’t die.'”
The tension was heightened as nearby fans threw bottles at Masango while he held on.
Despite the chaos, he managed to pull the man to safety by his backpack.
“Right after that, we both broke down crying. He said, ‘You saved my life.’ I didn’t even realize how serious it was until I saw the video later,” Siboniso Masango added.
Masango honoured for bravery as club steps in
The brave Sundowns fan confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns acknowledged his act of courage and made arrangements to safely transport Esperance fans out of the stadium.
“They organized buses for them to leave safely. I appreciate that they recognized what I did,” Siboniso said.
What began as a volatile night ended with an unforgettable display of humanity—reminding us all that even amid fierce rivalry, compassion can shine the brightest.
