As Southampton is officially relegated from the Premier League after 11 seasons, the club’s captain James Ward-Prowse has reflected on his team’s overall performance in the league this campaign.
Southampton lost more league games this season (24) than in any previous campaign in their history.
James Ward-Prowse shared some of his opinions yesterday following the team’s heartbreaking defeat against Fulham and subsequent relegation from the Premier League.
Fulham earned three points on a challenging afternoon at St. Mary’s thanks to two goals in the second half, the first of which was scored by Carlos Vincius on the counterattack after 48 minutes.
With a little more than 15 minutes left, Aleksander Mitrovic, who had recently returned, scored Southampton’s second goal with a close-range header.

James Ward-Prowse, the captain of Southampton, claimed that the club’s standards had fallen starting on the first day of preseason and continued until they were relegated.
“From the first day of pre-season to now, you can feel that the standards of the club have slipped away.” – he said.
Ward-Prowse acknowledged his Southampton teammates and he didn’t really put up much of a fight and didn’t give it their all this season, which he recognized was really disappointing from the team.
“There’s a way to lose games and there’s a way to fail in sport. The way we’ve done it this year, that’s the disappointing thing. We didn’t really go down with a fight and given everything we can. That’s the disappointing thing.” – he told sky sports.
