After Rivers United forward Chijioke Akuneto grabbed a brace in yesterday’s matchday 33, the race for top goal scorer in the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL have taken a new twist.
Chijioke Akuneto moved to the top of the league’s top scorers chart with 16 goals after he scored twice to help Rivers United seal a 2-1 home win against Abia Warriors on Sunday.
The 24-year-old forward, who is in his first season with Rivers United, has scored back-to-back braces in the Pride of Rivers’ last two home games to move to the top of the scoring chart with just five games left in the 2021/22 campaign.

Victor Mbaoma, who had a thrilling maiden professional hat trick over Enyimba in their 3-0 home win over Kwara United, was another player who displayed stunning performance in the past weekend game, putting him in second place with 15 goals.
Abdulazeez Yusuf of Gombe is yet to give up hopes of finishing the season as the league’s best attacker. In Gombe United’s 1-1 draw with Dakkada FC at home, he also grabbed his 15th league goal of the season.
Ishaq Rafiu of Rivers United, has been in top form for the Stanley Eguma side but currently in fourth place with 14 goals, while Valentine Odoh of Abia Warriors FC is in fifth place with 11 goals and two assists.
Nasarawa United beat Enugu Rangers 1-0 at home thanks to a penalty conversion by Tochukwu Michael.
It was his tenth goal of the season, while Ugochukwu Leonard Aputazie scored once in Sunshine Stars’ home triumph over Niger Tornadoes, which was also his tenth goal of the season.
Before his resurgence in Akure, the former Nasarawa United and Enyimba forward was withering away in Heartland last season.
Andy Okpe of Remo Stars and former Rivers United hitman – Ossy Martins (Enugu Rangers) are also tied with ten goals each.
