According to him, anxiety was a significant factor.

Stanley Eguma revealed this while addressing the press following Rivers United’s triumphant advance to the CAF Confederation Cup Group stages.

They secured a 2-0 victory over Etoile Filante at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium on Sunday.

Rivers United missed two penalty kicks, which led to the frustration of the home fans, causing some to leave the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium in disappointment.

However, the Port Harcourt team eventually secured a 2-0 win courtesy of a brace from Alex Oyowah.

The Pride of Rivers created numerous scoring opportunities but faltered when it came to converting them, and Coach Stanley Eguma has now shed light on the reason behind this unexpected turn of events.

Eguma attributed the missed penalties to anxiety and the lack of match experience among some of his players.

He emphasized that many of them had not participated in competitive matches this season, transitioning directly from the training ground to the high-stakes arena of CAF competitions.

Acknowledging the error in judgment, Eguma remarked that the players needed to be better prepared for such crucial stages.

However, he expressed optimism, explaining that as the league season progresses, with players consistently participating week in and week out, the team will undoubtedly improve.

Coach Eguma specifically mentioned two players responsible for missed penalties: Ebedebiri Endurance, Farouk Mohammed.

He highlighted that both are known for their penalty-taking abilities but succumbed to the pressure of the moment, possibly due to heightened anxiety.

Even the third penalty taker, Alex, who is considered one of the best in the team, struggled.

Eguma reminded everyone that in high-pressure situations like this, even the most skillful players can falter.

Eguma, however, urged for understanding and support for his players, stating that, on a good day, they are all exceptional penalty takers.

With time and experience, Rivers United aims to overcome these challenges and come out stronger in the future.
