All is set for the kick-off of the maiden edition of the Rivers Christian Cup Football Competition in Port Harcourt, tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24, 2024.
In a statement released today in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Deacon Kingsley Anyiwo, announced that the football competition, exclusively for Christian churches in Rivers State, will commence at Sansiri Football Field, Rumukwurushi, in Obio Akpor Local Government Area, Footballrover reports.
He further mentioned that the opening ceremony will start at 1 p.m., followed by the first match between Omega Power Ministry (OPM) and Assemblies of God Church, which will kick off at 4 p.m.
The LOC Chairman urged all participating churches and the general public to attend the opening ceremony.
According to the Media Officer of the Rivers Christian Cup Football Competition, Ambassador Didi-Phina Ojogwu,
“The tournament is the first of its kind within the Christian community in Nigeria, aimed at spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to the youth through football, while also providing a platform for the development of sports ministries in churches.”
The veteran sports broadcaster also revealed that eight teams from eight different churches have registered for the competition, which will culminate with the final match on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
The football competition is organised by Lighthouse Rescue Sports Outreach (LRSO).
