Southampton’s hopes were dashed in their Premier League clash on Sunday, as forgotten Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu was forced off the pitch with an injury blow.
Just as the Nigerian striker seemed to be making his mark, his promising performance was cut short, Footballrover reports.
The loss of Onuachu proved to be a huge setback for Southampton, disrupting their rhythm and leading to a 2-3 defeat to Liverpool.
This setback leaves the Saints in deep struggle with relegation, continuing their battle at the bottom of the league standings.
Paul Onuachu injury blow: what happened against Liverpool?
Onuachu had earned his first Premier League start of the season for Southampton against Liverpool, a moment he had been eagerly waited.
Recall that in January, the 29-year-old forward expressed his excitement about fulfilling his dream of playing in the Premier League with Southampton.
However, what was once a dream has since turned into a nightmare.
The striker had even been heavily linked with a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, but after receiving assurances from manager Russell Martin that he would get game time, Onuachu opted to stay.
Unfortunately, this latest injury blow could see those assurances end on the sidelines.
Against Liverpool, Onuachu was having an impressive performance. In the first half, he touched the ball 20 times, completed seven accurate passes, won five ground duels, and drew one foul.
He even matched the entire Liverpool team in dribbles, completing three to their combined total. However, barely five minutes into the second half, Onuachu was struck by the injury, forcing him to leave the pitch.
Despite his injury, Onuachu’s departure was an unusual one. He requested medical attention, signaling with painful gestures and demanding to be substituted.
Although he initially asked for a stretcher, Onuachu walked off the pitch, adding to the mystery surrounding the extent of his injury.
Onuachu’s time at Southampton has been marked by struggles, and this injury only adds to his woes.
While the severity of his injury is yet to be confirmed, coach Russell Martin will have to provide updates.
