The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has taken decisive action against Rivers Angels FC for the assault on a match official during Match No. 5 of the 2023 NWFL Super Six Competition.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, 9th June, 2023 in Asaba, Delta State, has drawn severe criticism and calls for disciplinary measures.
In a statement released by the NWFL, the league management expressed their firm stance against any form of assault on match officials, emphasizing the principles of fair play and respect.
Following an extensive investigation and confirmation of the unruly behavior by the two Rivers Angels players, the NWFL has imposed sanctions to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
Sanctions Imposed on Rivers Angels:
1. Fine of One Million Naira:
Rivers Angels FC has been fined One Million Naira for contravening Article 26.1, which explicitly prohibits any form of assault on match officials.
This fine serves as a stern reminder that such actions will not be tolerated, and the NWFL reserves the right to ban a venue for up to one year if match officials are assaulted.
2. Suspension of Players – Adjei Charlotte and Hassan Suliat:
Players Adjei Charlotte (Jersey No. 12) and Hassan Suliat (Jersey No. 22) have been suspended from participating in the 3rd Place match between Confluence Queens FC and Rivers Angels FC.
This suspension is a consequence of their actions, which brought the game into disrepute.
Importance of Fair Play and Respect:
The NWFL strongly encourages Rivers Angels FC to educate their players and officials about the significance of fair play and respect for match officials.
The league management emphasizes that such conduct tarnishes the reputation of the sport and undermines the spirit of competition.
The league’s commitment to upholding fair play and respect for match officials remains unwavering.
It is essential that all teams and individuals involved in the Nigeria Women Football League recognize the importance of maintaining a positive and sportsmanlike environment both on and off the field.
