The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Rivers Chapter (SWAN Rivers), showed remarkable resilience, securing a 1-1 draw in a thrilling novelty match against the Rivers State Football Referees’ Council at Yakubu Gowon Stadium.
The game was dedicated to unveiling the prestigious King Edward Asimini William-Dappa Pepple Football Refereeing Academy under the Rivers State Council.
SWAN Rivers had a sloppy start to the match as defensive errors handed the referees an early advantage, courtesy of a goal from Samuel Ekwus, who was assisted by Promise Amadi.
Despite the initial setback, SWAN Rivers persisted, Footballrover reports
Oqwy Osakwe’s effort marked their first shot on target, with Ibisaki Igani also coming close but missing the target.
Substitutions, including Precious Aham replacing Temple Ekpor, fueled SWAN Rivers’ dominance, yet they trailed narrowly at halftime.
The second half witnessed more substitutions, with Innocent Uzodinma and Mba Kalu joining the action.
SWAN Rivers intensified their attacks, and Chichetam Akawor, known as Sir Kris, finally capitalised on Victor Kwame Sampong’s pass, levelling the score.
Though Akawor missed chances for a hat-trick, SWAN Rivers pushed relentlessly.
The game ended with a well-deserved 1-1 draw.
