Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi conveyed heartfelt appreciation to departing Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, expressing gratitude for his role in fulfilling his dreams.
Steve Cooper bid farewell to Nottingham Forest amidst a challenging season, departing after the team’s struggle to secure wins, achieving only one victory in their last 13 games.
This unfortunate run positioned Forest in the bottom four of the Premier League table, Footballrover reports.
Cooper’s departure marks the end of a tenure where he significantly impacted the team, especially in recruiting talents like Awoniyi from Union Berlin in the summer of 2022.
The Super Eagles forward, in an emotional tribute on Instagram, credited Cooper for realising his aspirations and bringing out his best on the field.
“Thank you for helping me make my big dream come true and bringing out the best in me. All the very best, Gaffer,” he wrote.
Awoniyi, despite facing injury setbacks during his time with Forest, managed to net 15 goals and contribute three assists in 41 appearances, showing his potential under Cooper’s guidance.
The departing manager played a pivotal role in Forest’s recent history, notably contributing to their promotion through the Championship play-offs in May 2022.
Cooper’s influence extended beyond coaching, as he collaborated with club owner Angelos Marinakis in the recruitment of 44 players, including Awoniyi, across multiple transfer windows.
Nottingham Forest has yet to announce Cooper’s successor officially, although former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s involvement in discussions has been reported.
