Prior to the start of the 2022/23 EFL League One season, Portsmouth has confirmed the recruitment of Nigerian goalkeeper – Joshua Oluwayemi, who was born in England.
The Super Eagles potential goalkeeper, who left Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the previous campaign, has agreed to a one-year deal with an additional one year extension option.
The talented goalkeeper, who was once called up to the Super Eagles B side for a friendly against Mexico in 2021, left Tottenham as a free agent.
Portsmouth announced the signing of Joshua Oluwayemi on their official website saying;
“Pompey have completed the signing of goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi. The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year deal – with the club option of a further 12 months – after leaving Tottenham at the end of last season. Oluwayemi trained with Pompey earlier in the summer and played the second half of the pre-season victory at Havant & Waterlooville.”
Danny Cowley, the Portsmouth head coach, went on to say that Joshua Oluwayemi is an outstanding shot-stopper and explained why he was chosen for the position.
“Josh had a great footballing education with Tottenham and has amazing athleticism. He’s an incredible shot-stopper and is also good with his feet, so we’re delighted to bring him to the club. We’ve got Josh Griffiths and Toby Steward, and he’s another young player who our goalkeeping coach Joe Prodomo is looking forward to working with and helping to develop. There is plenty of potential and he is exactly the sort of promising player that our club is looking to sign.”
Oluwayemi was raised in Harold Hill, but he was born in Waltham Forest, England, and has already been selected to play for Nigeria at the senior level.
It’s an end of beautiful chapter at the club. I want to say thank you to all the coaching staff, the fans and the teammates. Picking me up as a 10 year old boy, it has been an eventful 11 years with many memories and @spursofficial will always have a place in my heart 💙💙 #COYS pic.twitter.com/ll80QSWdKO

He has participated in the EFL Trophy for Tottenham’s youth team and earned experience during a loan stint at Maidstone.
After Ikechukwu Ezenwa got hurt, Oluwayemi was asked to join the Nigerian team for the friendly match against Mexico on July 3, 2021.
Oluwayemi, who had previously represented England at the U15, U16, and U18 levels, expressed his happiness in wearing the Nigeria jersey after joining the Super Eagles team.
“All the glory be to God. I am glad to sign for such a big club with rich history. Cant wait to get started with @officialpompey . Let’s Go !!!” – He wrote on his twitter page.
Oluwayemi took part in the second half of Pompey’s preseason triumph at Havant & Waterlooville after training with them earlier in the summer.
