It was an exciting atmosphere as the Premier League clash between Southampton and Leicester City will be remembered for its drama, after Joe Aribo scored his first goal of season.
With both Aribo and Paul Onuachu playing for Southampton, and Wilfred Ndidi representing Leicester, this Super Eagles derby promised excitement. And it certainly delivered, Footballrover reports.
Southampton took a commanding two-goal lead, but Leicester City’s fighting spirit saw them claw their way back, capitalizing on a red card to Southampton and sealing an incredible comeback at the very last moment.
Joe Aribo’s early impact
The Saints were desperate to break their winless Premier League run, and it showed from the outset.
Early pressure paid off when Joe Aribo, who had already rattled the crossbar, finally broke through.
After a slick move involving Kyle Walker-Peters, Aribo coolly slotted home his first goal of the season, igniting the St. Mary’s crowd.
Moments earlier, Cameron Archer had put Southampton ahead with a simple tap-in, but it was Aribo’s strike that seemed to put them on course for their elusive first win of the campaign.
However, Wilfred Ndidi and his Leicester teammates refused to surrender. Bilal El Khannouss struck the woodwork as Leicester threatened to respond before halftime, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.
Leicester’s stunning comeback
After the break, Leicester’s momentum grew. Facundo Buonanotte pulled one back after some impressive work from Issahaku Fatawu, before Jamie Vardy earned and converted a penalty, leveling the score.
Then, in a dramatic twist, Jordan Ayew netted deep into stoppage time, completing Leicester’s comeback.
Southampton’s failure to hold onto their lead cost them dearly, as they were denied their first win in 21 top-flight games.
Joe Aribo’s goal may have highlighted the evening, but Leicester’s resilience ultimately stole the headlines.
