Rivers United are through to the next round of the Rivers State FA Cup after crushing the Feeders team 4-1 in the quarterfinal stage, courtesy of hat-trick from Ifeanyi Francis.
Goals from Ifeanyi Francis and Malachi Ohawume at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday morning were all the Stanley Eguma side needed to secure a semi-final spot in the competition.
Both teams got off to a good start, but it only took the senior side 15 minutes to pull ahead of their feeders. Ifeanyi Francis scooped the ball past the goalie to put the main team in front.
12 minutes later, Malachi Ohawume thought he had given Rivers United a 2-0 lead, but his goal was chopped off as he was correctly called offside.
After 35 minutes, the Rivers United Feeders squad equalized the score, but they were unable to hang on to it as the Senior team once again regained the lead just two minutes before halftime.
Ifeanyi Francis scored his second goal of the match by tapping in the ball after receiving a clever cross from Ebube Duru, and the first half ended that way.
As the second half got underway with the same energy, the Pride of Rivers subsequently extended the scoreline to 3-1 in the 79th minute.
Ekeocha Chukwudi’s shot was initially stopped by the Feeders goalie, but Malachi Ohawume slammed home the rebound.
With 9 minutes left on the clock, Ifeanyi Francis scored a stunning goal to complete his hat-trick and give Rivers United’s senior team a semifinal date with Wilbros FC in the state FA Cup.
The Eguma side will now focus their attention on the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation’s Cup group B matchday 5 tie against Diables Noirs on Sunday.
