Super Eagles forward Gift Orban produced a lively performance on Sunday afternoon, registering an assist and coming agonisingly close to scoring, but Hellas Verona fell 2-1 at home to Inter Milan in a dramatic Serie A clash.
The 23-year-old, making his ninth league appearance of the season, started brightly and was involved in most of Verona’s attacking moments, Footballrover reports.
Gift Orban Creates Verona’s Equaliser but Luck Turns Late
His persistence paid off just before halftime when he set up Giovane to fire home the equaliser — his first assist of the campaign.
Moments later, Orban almost turned scorer himself, striking the post with a powerful effort that left Yann Sommer rooted to the spot.
Orban stayed on the pitch for 73 minutes before being replaced by Cheikh Niasse, leaving a strong impression despite the narrow defeat.
The Nigerian forward has now tallied two goals and one assist in Serie A, showing glimpses of the form that once made him one of Europe’s most exciting young strikers.
Inter Milan Strike Deep Into Stoppage Time
While Orban inspired hope for Verona, the visitors’ depth ultimately told.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s well-taken volley put Inter ahead early, before Barella’s stoppage-time cross deflected cruelly off Martin Frese to hand the Nerazzurri all three points.
The result stretched Hellas Verona’s winless run to ten games, keeping them in the relegation zone, while Inter Milan moved within a point of champions Napoli.
For Orban, it’s another brilliant outing, but his teammates failed him once again. Obviously individual brilliance wasn’t enough to change their fortunes.
