The Flying Eagles of Nigeria were eliminated from the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 4–0 defeat against Argentina in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.
Despite a promising group stage campaign, defensive frailties and missed opportunities cost the seven-time African champions dearly against a clinical Argentine side, Footballrover reports.
Argentina Expose Defensive Gaps in Santiago
The Flying Eagles entered this knockout clash on the back of four points from three Group F matches, including a 3–2 win over Saudi Arabia and a 1–1 draw with Colombia.
Captain Daniel Bameyi’s penalty prowess had given Nigeria hope, but the Round of 16 match underlined persistent issues in defensive organisation that have plagued the team throughout the tournament.
Argentina made an early statement, with Alejo Sarco scoring in the second minute, catching the Flying Eagles off guard.
Nigeria struggled to regain composure, and Maher Carrizo added a brace before the hour mark, clipping the wings of the Eagles further.
A fourth goal after the break sealed Nigeria’s fate, as Argentina’s precision in front of goal exposed the defensive weaknesses that had been evident in both the group stage and earlier at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Flying Eagles Struggle to Convert Chances
Although Nigeria gained possession in parts of the game, reminiscent of their group stage performance against Norway, poor finishing and a lack of clear-cut chances in dangerous areas proved costly.
The Flying Eagles had previously been guilty of hitting the woodwork multiple times against Colombia and failing to convert open-play opportunities against Saudi Arabia. Against Argentina, these shortcomings were brutally punished.
Head Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s side showed flashes of creativity and resilience, but Argentina’s defensive organisation and clinical attacking meant that Nigeria’s efforts were in vain.
The match ended 4–0, marking the fourth game in which the Flying Eagles failed to keep a clean sheet, as Argentina pulled revenge for their Round of 16 defeat to Nigeria at the 2023 U-20 World Cup in San Juan.
