Former NPFL champions Enyimba reignited their league ambitions with a crucial 1-0 win over fierce rivals Rivers United in a tense Matchday 24 showdown at the Elephant Park in Aba on Saturday afternoon.
The victory, which snapped a two-game losing streak, sent a strong message to their title challengers, footballrover reports.
Imo Obot’s magic seals Enyimba’s triumph
A moment of brilliance from Imo Obot in the 42nd minute proved decisive. His exquisitely placed free kick left goalkeeper of the Garden City side helpless, igniting celebrations among the home crowd.
Head coach Stanley Eguma, visibly filled with joy, dedicated the hard-fought win to the club’s passionate supporters.
“I feel very happy; it’s a sweet victory considering the magnitude of the match. For some time, we haven’t been winning our games, so coming back home with this victory, we are giving it to the fans as a Valentine gift.”
Rivers United push, but Enyimba stands firm
The high-stakes clash lived up to expectations, with both teams engaging in a tactical battle. The Pride of Rivers, managed by former Enyimba boss Finidi George, pressed relentlessly after conceding but found no way past the resilient Aba giants.
Finidi, despite the loss, acknowledged the brilliance of match-winner Imo Obot, calling him a “free-kick specialist.”
He urged his players to channel their fighting spirit into their next fixture against Akwa United.
While the win was a relief, Eguma voiced concerns over club’s packed schedule.
“The issue has been that we’ve not had enough time to work on the team. The fixtures have not helped us at all. We’ve been travelling and playing almost every 48 hours. We just returned from Benin 48 hours ago and played today, and tomorrow we are travelling to Katsina. It’s pressure on the team, with its wear and tear, but we have to manage and play better.”
With momentum on their side, Enyimba shifts focus to their Matchday 25 clash against Katsina United. Eguma remains hopeful they can build on this victory.
“The management is doing everything possible to motivate the players. We will go there to put up a good performance, and hopefully, we can get a positive result.”
As the NPFL title race heats up, People’s Elephant has made their statement—they are back in business and ready to fight for glory.
