NPL newcomers, Sporting Lagos has made a significant acquisition by signing former Warri Wolves captain, Ekene Nero Olisema.
Sporting Lagos Signs Olisema Ekene, Rejecting Rivers United Offer
The 23-year-old midfielder has committed to a two-year contract with Sporting Lagos, reportedly worth around N400,000 in salary.
Under the guidance of Coach Paul Offor, Sporting Lagos has been actively strengthening its squad in preparation for the upcoming season.
Ekene’s arrival marks another important addition to the team’s roster as they aim to make an impact in the top flight.
This move comes as a surprise to many, as Footballrover understands that Ekene turned down a more lucrative offer from the 2022 NPL champions, Rivers United.
It is believed that Rivers United had proposed a deal worth N600,000 to secure the services of the talented midfielder.
However, Ekene made the decision to join Sporting Lagos despite the lower salary, showcasing his faith in the club’s vision and project.
Having captained Warri Wolves to a commendable second-place finish in the 2022-23 Nigeria National League (NNL) season, Ekene’s leadership qualities and on-field performances have caught the attention of several clubs.
Although the exact signing fee remains undisclosed, Sporting Lagos is expected to make an official statement to announce the acquisition of Ekene as part of their preparations for the upcoming campaign in the top flight.
Ekene Olisema’s arrival at Sporting Lagos marks the second major signing for the club.
Previously, they secured the services of Junior Lokosa on a short-term deal after the expiration of his contract with Remo Stars.
The club’s management, led by Nigerian Software engineer Shola Akinlade, has been working diligently to build a strong squad capable of competing at the highest level.
Sporting Lagos was established in 2022 and has already made remarkable progress both on and off the pitch.
Under Akinlade’s guidance, the club gained promotion to the Nigeria Premier League for the 2023-24 season, demonstrating their ambition and determination to leave a mark in Nigerian football.
