Super Falcons star Deborah Abiodun has been recalled from loan by the Washington Spirit, marking a major boost for the club as they head into the final stretch of the 2025 season.
Fresh from her Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory with Nigeria, the midfielder returns to DC four months earlier than planned, ready to bring her winning mentality and international experience back to the Spirit, Footballrover reports.
Deborah Abiodun Recalled from Loan Early
The Spirit announced today that Abiodun has been called back from loan at Dallas Trinity FC of the Gainbridge Super League.
Originally set to stay until the end of 2025, her early return means she will rejoin the Spirit in time for a decisive run of fixtures.
During her loan spell, Abiodun featured in 14 matches, logging over 750 minutes of action and earning eight starts.
Her consistent performances in Dallas showcased her ability to control the midfield and adapt quickly to a new league.
Spirit Welcome Back a Champion
Abiodun’s return comes just weeks after her triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.
The midfielder, who also spent part of this year’s preseason with Washington, is seen as a vital reinforcement.
— “We’re thrilled to bring Deb back to the Spirit as we approach the home stretch of the 2025 season,” said Interim General Manager Nathan Minion.
— “After following her impressive performances with Dallas and Nigeria this year, we know Deb will fit very well with this team and help us accomplish our goals,” Nathan concluded.
The 21-year-old signed her first professional contract with the Spirit in January—a three-year deal with an option through 2028—after two standout seasons at the University of Pittsburgh.
International Pedigree with the Super Falcons
Beyond her club commitments, Abiodun is already a seasoned international. She represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and was part of the Super Falcons squad at the 2024 Olympics.
Her crowning moment so far came this summer, when she lifted the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
The Spirit will next be in action at Audi Field on Sunday, August 31, when they face Chicago Stars FC in the club’s annual Pride Match.
