Top performer Cyriel Dessers on Sunday evening scored his first Greek Super League goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to help Panathinaikos secure all three points against Olympiacos in their Round 4 home clash.
Despite giving his side the lead, Dessers watched Panathinaikos surrender that slim advantage and settle for a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Apóstolos Nikolaidis in Athens, Footballrover reports.
Cyriel Dessers Delivers for Panathinaikos
The 30-year-old forward has now scored in back-to-back games for his new club, following his solo strike in their Greek Cup win over Athens Kallithea in the previous outing.
After a tense first half, the game came alive just three minutes into the second period thanks to the Nigerian international, who found the net to break the deadlock.
At the 75-minute mark, the Super Eagles striker made way for Karol Swiderski. Just when the home fans thought Panathinaikos had secured victory, Ayoub El Kaabi struck in stoppage time to ensure both sides shared the spoils.
With that result, Cyriel Dessers and his new side remain 12th in the table with only two points. They will now look to regroup quickly ahead of their upcoming Europa League clash with Young Boys.
George Ilenikhena Shines in Monaco’s Ligue 1 Triumph
In France, George Ilenikhena capped AS Monaco’s dominant 5-2 victory over Metz with a superb stoppage-time goal, sealing a third straight Ligue 1 win for Adi Hütter’s men at the Stade Louis II.
The 19-year-old forward showed composure and finishing quality, adding gloss to a performance already lifted by Ansu Fati’s impactful brace off the bench.
Monaco had to show resilience after falling behind early. Mika Biereth and Fati turned the game around before Metz briefly rallied through Gauthier Hein’s penalty.
But it was Ilenikhena’s late strike that underlined Monaco’s attacking depth and firepower, lifting them to second place in the table and extending their unbeaten home run to 11 matches.
The young Nigerian talent now has two goals in four matches, with both strikes coming in back-to-back league games — each arriving late to seal victories.
