Super Eagles star Alhassan Yusuf made history with a sensational performance that inspired New England Revolution to close the 2025 MLS regular season with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Chicago Fire FC at Gillette Stadium.
The Nigerian midfielder returned from the international break to make a decisive impact, delivering his second goal of the campaign along with an assist, Footballrover reports.
Alhassan Yusuf Sparks Early Revolution Goal
Yusuf, who was sidelined throughout Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic, wasted no time making his mark in this MLS fixture.
Just 44 seconds into the MLS Decision Day match, he intercepted a loose touch from a Chicago defender and chipped the ball past goalkeeper Chris Brady for New England’s quickest goal of the season.
This marked Yusuf’s first goal since May 11th, when he scored in a 3-3 draw against Orlando, ending a six-month and 22-match goal drought.
His early strike set the tone for an exciting encounter at Gillette Stadium.
Late Drama Seals Exciting Draw
Chicago Fire responded quickly, pushing for an equaliser throughout the match.
In the 82nd minute, Hugo Cuypers combined with Zinckernagel on a clever give-and-go to set up the Danish winger for a one-on-one with Matt Turner, finishing emphatically in the six-yard box.
New England countered late, earning a crucial foul in the final third. Carles Gil delivered a pinpoint cross that Dor Turgeman headed home in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
However, Chicago struck back immediately. Joel Waterman sent a sharp ball across the goal that deflected off Turgeman and into the net, securing a dramatic 2-2 draw in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Yusuf and Gil were among the few Revolution players to feature in all 34 games this season, with Gil finishing as the team’s MVP and Golden Boot winner.
The result closed out the 2025 regular season on an intense note for both sides.
