Ajax coach Francesco Farioli has shed light on the surprising reason why Nigerian forward Chuba Akpom has found himself struggling for minutes at the club.

With stiff competition from strikers Wout Weghorst and Brian Brobbey, Akpom’s place in the lineup has been limited, despite his undeniable talent and potential impact on Ajax’s attack, Footballrover reports.

Joining the club from Middlesbrough last year, Chuba’s arrival was highly anticipated, and he was even handed the prestigious number ten jersey.

But the reality of the Eredivisie has proven challenging, as Akpom’s minutes on the pitch have been few.

Just when it seemed like his role would expand this season, Ajax brought in Dutch international Weghorst, adding another hurdle for the Nigerian to overcome.

coach Farioli emphasised that the rotation among forwards is necessary, stating that with such talent at his disposal, he must carefully balance playing time among his striking options.

Still, he reassured fans that Akpom remains a valued player, hinting that his patience could eventually lead to greater opportunities.

“We have three great strikers (Akpom, Weghorst, and Brian Brobbey), and we have to use their qualities as often as possible,” Farioli said.

“You journalists always try to drive a wedge between us. After the transfer window closed, I made it clear to them how I see their role. My vision has not changed. I told them that I would do my best to give them as much playing time as possible,” the coach said.

Chuba recently offered a reminder of what he can bring the team by scoring a crucial goal during their Europa League victory over Qarabag.

While his game time may be limited for now, coach Farioli has expressed optimism, suggesting that if the Nigerian forward continues to impress, he might just force his way into a more consistent starting role.
