Rivers United defeated Khana FC in the Rivers State AITEO Cup semi-finals at the Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt, resulting in a narrow victory for the NPFL club on Thursday.
Coach Stanley Eguma picked a solid team to face the youthful Ogoni ballers, which included the likes of Chiamaka Madu and Ishaq Rafiu Kayode.
But it was Nyima Nwagua who scored a remarkable goal to give the Pride of Rivers a 1-0 victory and a final spot at the end of the game.
Rivers United made a strong start to the game and came close to scoring through Ishaq Rafiu Kayode and Ebube Duru, but Khana FC goalkeeper Saturday Nwazormi was up to the challenge.
But it took the Stanley Eguma side only 24 minutes to score the first goal, and it was Nyima Nwagua who scored a magnificent header against his hometown club, courtesy to Ebube Duru’s assist.
Chiamaka Madu came close to creating a chance to double their advantage six minutes later, but his cross was blocked.
After 35 minutes, Solomon Okuruket replaced the goal scorer, Nyima Nwagua, before Nwazormi Saturday, the goalie for Khana FC, made the final stop of the first half, tipping Ishaq Kayode’s shot for a corner kick.
