Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman has vowed to bring his A-game to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the Super Eagles set their sights on repeating their 2013 triumph.
Lookman, who has been in fine form for Atalanta in Serie A, is one of the key players in Nigeria’s squad for the tournament in Ivory Coast, Footballrover reports.
This will be the first time the Nigerian winger will be representing the country in a major competition.
While speaking to the Super Eagles media, the 26-year-old, who featured for England at the youth level before he decided to don the colours of Nigeria, said,
“Just like everyone, I’ll do my best for the team and bring my A-game to this tournament for Nigeria and the fans. We’ll see as a team where that takes us.”
Nigeria has been drawn into Group A alongside Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Guinea-Bissau. The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 14.
Lookman is confident that Nigeria can go all the way to Ivory Coast.
“As a squad and as a team, we have got a strong mindset, and we are together. You know, like the slogan, Let’s do it again, we are fighting to do it again,” he added.
Nigeria’s last AFCON title came in 2013, when they beat Burkina Faso in the final.
The Super Eagles have reached the final twice since then, but have lost on both occasions.
Ademola lookman must start ahead of Moses Simon when AfCON starts and that is not because Simon missed the PK.

Lookman believes that Nigeria has the experience and quality to win the tournament this time around.
“I think as a team, like I said, we are together; we are behind each other. As individuals, we believe in ourselves, and as a team, we believe in ourselves; that is the mindset.”
As the Super Eagles are aiming to win their first AFCON title in 10 years, the young forward is expected to carry over his 10-goal contribution from Serie A for Atalanta into the AFCON tournament.
He has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 18 games.
