Calvin Bassey finally returned to Fulham’s starting lineup after an impressive Africa Cup of Nations campaign that earned him a place in the tournament’s Best XI — only to endure a sobering night at the Etihad.
It wasn’t just Bassey who endured a difficult outing — Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze were also in action as Fulham slumped to a heavy away defeat, Footballrover reports.
Calvin Bassey struggles as City tighten grip on title race
The Nigerian defender was handed a start in Fulham’s Premier League trip to title-chasing Manchester City, marking his first appearance in the XI since December 13, when the Cottagers edged a 3-2 victory before he departed for international duty.
His reintegration into the side has been gradual. After returning from Morocco, Bassey missed the 1-0 defeat at Leeds United due to suspension for accumulated bookings.
He was then an unused substitute in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Brighton and featured only briefly—five minutes—in the 3-2 loss at Manchester United.
He also remained on the bench in last weekend’s 2-1 home defeat to Everton.
At the Etihad, however, Marco Silva restored him to the heart of the defence in a high-stakes encounter.
Bassey completed the full 90 minutes, but Fulham were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by a ruthless City side with a dominant display.
It was a difficult return to the starting fold for Bassey, whose strong AFCON showing had raised expectations.
Manchester City moved to within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal with a commanding 3-0 win over Fulham, extending their extraordinary run of 20 straight victories against the London side in all competitions.
As expected, City dominated from the outset, continuing their long-standing midweek league form, and created early chances through Phil Foden.
Their breakthrough came midway through the first half when a defensive error allowed Antoine Semenyo to fire home.
Bassey’s AFCON high meets Premier League reality
Fulham threatened a quick reply, but a crucial save from Gianluigi Donnarumma preserved the lead.
City quickly capitalised, with Semenyo turning provider for Nico O’Reilly to double the advantage before Erling Haaland added a superb third from distance before the break.
Fulham showed brief intent after halftime but lacked a cutting edge. With the result under control, Pep Guardiola rotated his squad as City comfortably saw out the match, extending their unbeaten home league run to 12 games and maintaining pressure in the title race.
Meanwhile, in another Premier League encounter between Nottingham Forest and Wolves, it was a Super Eagles showdown — Ola Aina up against Tolu Arokodare.
Aina delivered a solid performance for Forest, but the hosts were held to a goalless draw at home by Arokodare and his Wolves teammates.
