Three Nigerian players, William Troost-Ekong, Daniel Udoh, and Collins Sor, were at the centre of contrasting storylines across Europe and the Middle East on Friday night, with moments of misfortune, match-winning impact and personal milestones all unfolding in league action.
Troost-Ekong’s Own Goal Sums Up Al Kholood Defeat
William Troost-Ekong endured a night to forget as an own goal compounded Al Kholood’s heartbreak in their Saudi Pro League defeat to Al Taawoun on Friday, Footballrover reports.
The visitors were already in front after Cristopher Zambrano struck in the 22nd minute at the Ar-Rass Stadium.
Matters then worsened in the 75th minute when the former Super Eagles captain, who recently retired from international football, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to give Al Taawoun a two-goal cushion.
The result leaves Troost-Ekong and his teammates down in 12th place, with just nine points from 10 matches.
Udoh the Difference as Salford Edge Harrogate
Daniel Udoh was the hero as Salford edged Harrogate 1-0 at home, scoring the decisive second-half penalty after being fouled by Kyle Jameson.
His strike secured Salford’s fourth league win in five games, even with manager Karl Robinson absent due to illness.
While Salford started strongly, chances were limited, and Harrogate, struggling for a win since September, had opportunities to take the lead but were denied by keeper Matty Young and their own misses.
Udoh’s calm penalty ultimately made the difference, ensuring all three points for the Ammies.
Despite losing more duels than any other player in the match (19), the 29-year-old Nigerian forward still made a decisive impact, scoring his sixth goal of the season to take his total goal contributions to ten in 16 League Two appearances.
The strike also meant he has now found the net in back-to-back games, following his goal in the 3-1 victory over Barnet in their previous outing.
Sor Scores on Milestone Night Despite Genk Loss
Collins Sor marked his 100th league appearance for KRC Genk with a goal against Club Brugge in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.
However, the milestone proved bittersweet as Genk suffered a thrilling 5-3 home defeat in an entertaining round-20 clash at the Cegeka Arena.
Sor opened the scoring for the hosts, registering his first league goal of the season in his 15th appearance, but it was not enough to earn Genk a point.
The 25-year-old forward was the most fouled player in the match, winning three fouls, and played 72 minutes before being replaced by Junya Ito.
