Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers praised Kelechi Iheanacho for his decisive impact in the Europa League after the Super Eagles striker struck in a 1-1 draw against Crvena zvezda in Belgrade.
The 28-year-old came off the bench to break the deadlock with a composed finish, proving why Rodgers sees him as a game-changing presence in Celtic’s attack, Footballrover reports.
Kelechi Iheanacho lifts Celtic with Europa League strike
Introduced in the second half, Iheanacho latched onto a precise pass from Benjamin Nygren, controlled the ball smoothly near the penalty spot, and guided it into the far corner.
His calm finish gave Celtic the lead at the Rajko Mitic Stadium before the hosts later equalised.
— “I thought Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal was outstanding,” Rodgers told TNT Sports, via BBC. “We needed someone centrally to hold the ball up. One of Kele’s great strengths is that he can take the ball in and progress us up the pitch, and he gave us a better platform.”
Rodgers also admitted he wanted his side to be “more proactive,” but was encouraged by the forward’s influence in changing Celtic’s rhythm in the final third.
Bright start for Kelechi Iheanacho as Celtic look ahead
Since joining Celtic on a free transfer in the summer, Iheanacho has already scored twice and registered an assist in just three games.
His sharp form has lifted optimism among supporters, many of whom see him as the striker capable of leading the Hoops European and domestic campaigns.
The resurgence comes after testing spells at Sevilla and Middlesbrough last season, with Rodgers’ faith clearly sparking a new chapter in the Nigerian’s career.
Beyond club football, Kelechi Iheanacho’s form could have international implications. Nigeria face crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin in October, and the former Manchester City striker will be eager to use his Celtic performances as a springboard for a Super Eagles recall.
Overlooked in recent fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa, his Europa League display may strengthen his case for a return.
