Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, but the spotlight fell on Tolu Arokodare, who finally opened his account in English football.
The Super Eagles forward, who joined Wolves from Racing Genk on deadline day, showed glimpses of his potential with a composed finish that sealed the win late in the game, Footballrover reports.
Wolves Manager on Tolu Arokodare: “He Needs to Work Hard”
With just three minutes remaining, Arokodare latched onto a perfectly timed through ball from Joao Gomes and lofted the ball over the Everton goalkeeper, doubling Wolves’ advantage.
It took him 174 minutes across three appearances to find his first goal for the club.
Manager Vitor Pereira offered a mixed assessment after the game. While praising Arokodare’s confidence and contribution off the bench, Pereira stressed that the striker is still short of peak physical condition.
— “When we are expecting a strong shot on the goal, he has the confidence in himself. Of course, he is not in his shape physically speaking… This is the spirit I want to see,” Pereira said.
First Goal Sparks Optimism, But Fitness Remains Key
Arokodare’s goal was more than just a number on the scoresheet—it highlighted his potential to be a key figure for Wolves once fully adapted to the pace and physicality of English games.
However, Pereira emphasised that his usage was planned to allow gradual integration rather than a full 90-minute exposure.
— “Tolu came in at a moment when we didn’t have Jorgen to play. The plan was to give him time to adapt and start getting minutes. He needs to work hard to get his condition, and he will help us,” Pereira added.
As Wolves await the fourth-round Carabao Cup draw, Arokodare’s breakthrough offers a glimpse of what could be a key season for the Nigerian striker, combining flashes of skill with the promise of consistent impact once fully fit.
