Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers is soaking in the magic of a football journey that has come full circle—from idolising a Premier League legend as a boy to earning a personal nod from him in a European showdown.

The 30-year-old Nigerian international has revealed the boyhood Premier League club he supported growing up—Chelsea—driven largely by the charisma of one iconic manager: José Mourinho, Footballrover reports.

So when Dessers registered a goal and assist in Rangers’ 3-1 UEFA Europa League Round of 16 win over Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in Istanbul, it wasn’t just another good night at the office. It was personal—and unforgettable.

“I also spoke to Jose Mourinho after we played Fenerbahce this season,” Dessers shared in an interview with Breda Newspaper.

“He even came to say hello after the game. I think that’s quite special. I was a Chelsea supporter as a child, so I really grew up with him.”

Long before he became Rangers’ leading man on European nights, Dessers had already crossed paths with Mourinho during his stint at Italian side Cremonese.

But the recognition from the legendary manager after their latest meeting felt different—more meaningful.

As a former Chelsea fan, Dessers grew up admiring Mourinho’s tactical mastery and winning aura.

That boyhood connection added an emotional layer to their interaction after the match in Istanbul.

Despite facing criticism for missed chances, Cyriel Dessers has found something rare at Rangers—an environment that mirrors his passion and character.

The striker sees similarities between Rangers, Feyenoord, and NAC Breda: clubs with grit, edge, and a fiercely loyal fanbase.

“There is a raw edge to each of these clubs,” he said. “I like clubs where it is very pure and passionate… When it goes well, they are the most beautiful clubs in the world.”

Dessers’ pride in representing Rangers extends beyond Europe’s spotlight. Reflecting on the team’s Europa League run and his memorable goal at Old Trafford against Manchester United, the Super Eagles star called it “the pinnacle” of his career so far.

“My brother texted me after the match and said, ‘Do you realise you’ve just scored at Old Trafford!’ That’s something you look back on with pride after your career.”

Whether reminiscing about his boyhood Premier League club, sharing a warm moment with Mourinho, or embracing the raw passion of Rangers, Dessers has written his own special football story—one chapter at a time.

And the 30-year-old Nigerian is still writing more, as he was recently awarded the club’s top scorer for the 2024/25 season.

He was presented with the award during the Rangers Player Awards Ceremony, marking his first individual accolade since joining the club.

So far this season, Dessers has netted 24 goals in all competitions for Barry Ferguson’s side.

He succeeds captain James Tavernier, who claimed the honour in the 2023/24 season.
